The United States Department of Energy is a Washington, D.C.-based government administration that researches and develops technology and science for national security purposes. It has seven sub organizations under it including the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Energy Technologies Office .

One of its main areas of focus is on the nation's energy system and ensuring that it is up to date. Another area of focus is on science and innovation. The department funds initiatives such as the Loan Programs Office and the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) for the research of clean energy technologies. It also provides capital to energy startups and has made over 130 investments in industries such as clean energy, data analysis, wind energy, and energy storage. The capital is mainly in the form of grants and ranges between $200,000 to over $34 million.

There is also a Nuclear Security & Nonproliferation arm of the organization with a focus on maintaining nuclear security for the United States of America through defense, nonproliferation, and environmental efforts.
