CTFusion is a company developing a novel approach to magnetic fusion energy employing a spheromak. Fusion is maintained with the companies patented plasma current-drive technology, Imposed-Dynamo Current Drive (IDCD).
They are seeking to build new prototype devices to demonstrate that IDCD scales to reactor-relevant plasma configurations. Given sufficient funding, the goal is to provide a commercially viable, grid deployable power plant design by the 2030s.
CTFusion is a spin-out from the University of Washington, motivated by results from the HIT-SI Research Project. Founded in 2015 by Thomas Jarboe (President) Professor in Plasma Physics and Control Fusion Research, at the University of Washington and Derek Sutherland (CEO) a former Ph.D. Candidate at the University of Washington. The company is based in Seattle, Washington and is a member of the American Fusion Project run by the American Security Project.
CTFusion was awarded a $3 million grant by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Advanced Research Projects Agency in Energy to help develop the first commercial nuclear fusion reactor.
