Overview

Land Rover is a British car brand of primarily four-wheel drive vehicles. It is a subsidiary of Tata Motors. Tata Motors, owned by the Tata Group, is an Indian automotive manufacturer headquartered in Mumbai that began in 1868 as a trading company. In 2008, Tata Motors bought Land Rover and Jaguar Cars from Ford. Five years later, in 2013, Land Rover and Jaguar cars were joined to become Jaguar Land Rover Limited.

History

Land Rover got its start as the Rover Company, a bicycle manufacturer, in 1885 in Warwickshire, England. In its early days, Land Rover's chief designer was Maurice Wilkes. Wilkes owned an Army surplus Jeep and, in the summer of 1947, he and his associates created a prototype using its components. By the end of the summer, the prototype was up and running using a Jeep chassis, a Rover's 1.6-liter engine and four-speed gearbox, and a two-speed transfer case.In 1948, the Land Rover made its debut at the Amsterdam Motor Show. The vehicle was only intended to be produced for a year or two at maximum, until it outsold the Rover brand worldwide.

Since 1948, Land Rover has been manufacturing authentic 4x4s. The Land Rover Defender, Discovery 4, and Range Rover Sport, and Range Rover models are all built at the Solihull plant. The Land Rover Freelander 2 is built at the Halewood plant in Liverpool.

Present day

Jaguar Land Rover is the largest manufacturer of premium vehicles in the UK,employing over 18,000 people and supporting more than 130,000 jobs through direct employment, dealers, suppliers and broader economy. The company exports generate nearly £6 billion for the UK economy, with 78 percent exported to over 160 countries and 70 percent of Jaguars exported to over 60 countries.

JLR is the only automotive manufacturer to hold all three Royal Warrants from Her Majesty The Queen, His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh, and His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales. Jaguar and Land Rover were each granted their first Royal Warrants in 1951.
